Music for Restored Times

  • Chapel of The Queen's College, High Street, OX1 4AW Oxford (map)

Come and hear some jewels of the English Restoration School repertoire, performed by the Choir of The Queen's College, Oxford, and Instruments of Time & Truth. The concert features verse anthems by John Blow, Henry Cooke and Henry Purcell, as well as Pelham Humfrey, Matthew Locke and Michael Wise. Singers from across the choir will perform solo verses, which alternate with passages for full choir, much akin to the operation of the seventeenth-century Chapel Royal.

This concert stands as the culmination of a one-day event entitled Music, Creativity, and Culture in England, 1642-88 which is being organised by Samuel Teague, a tenor lay clerk in the choir. The event marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Captain Henry Cooke, on whom Sam’s doctoral study is focussed, and grants you a unique opportunity to hear repertoire that has potentially remained unheard in over 300 years.
